INDIANAPOLIS: During the NFL Scouting Combine press conference on Tuesday, general manager of the Tennessee Titans Ran Carthon let up his affection for running back Tyjae Spears without holding back. Carthon speaks coolly and collectedly at press conferences.

But when someone asked him about Spears, he responded with a well-timed swear word that betrayed a trace of emotion. “To put it simply, he’s made of the right s——t,” Carthon remarked, grinning to go along with his choice of adjective. “And those are the type of guys that we want to have in our program.”

Last season, Spears was a rookie and Derrick Henry’s backup for the Titans. He ran for 453 yards and two scores, plus he caught 52 receptions for an additional 385 yards and one score in the end. Spears hasn’t returned to his peak, in Carthon’s opinion. “He has a strong enthusiasm for football.

He is a huge fan of the game. He works diligently. And I think that’s how he’s wired, and you guys who’ve gotten to know him, you love that about him,” Carthon remarked. “One of those men who is in the building all the time is Tyjae. I am aware that his knee was a major worry for many people, and it was the main question this time of year and after we selected him. However, the player in question never skipped a game or practice.”
