Superb Race Feels Ex-EFL Star Ipswich Has “Taken Control” Of Promotion
Former Championship player David Prutton thinks it “remarkable” that Ipswich Town has now claimed the lead in the fight for automatic promotion.
Despite their inconsistent performance, few anticipate Leicester City to lose their dominant position in the Championship, meaning there could only be one automatic promotion slot available.
Many had assumed Leeds United would secure the second slot after a string of victories, but Ipswich’s performance has recently picked up steam once more.
With a two-point advantage over Leeds, who are now in third place in the league, the Tractor Boys have won five straight games.
Prutton praised Ipswich profusely, calling their comeback from a disorganised string of games at the beginning of the year “remarkable.”
Although it appeared like Leeds and Southampton were fighting for the last automatic position, he acknowledged that with their present form, Ipswich has gained the lead in the race.
“It has been quite a run for Ipswich,” Prutton wrote in his column for Sky Sports News.
“Five straight victories and a return to second position.
“They have taken charge of a promotion battle that momentarily appeared to be a joust between Southampton and Leeds.
“It truly is amazing.”
In a close promotion race, Ipswich needs three more points to advance, so they play Bristol City tonight at Portman Road.
