Road closed as rescue team attends serious crash scene in Oldham

Police and paramedics have blocked off a main road in Oldham this afternoon following a person being hit by a HGV.

An air ambulance was scrambled to the scene, on Manchester Road, with a heavy police presence also currently in attendance following the collision this afternoon. The road is blocked off northbound between Old Lane and Frederick Street.

Greater Manchester Police and the North West Ambulance Service have been approached for details.

The victim remains in hospital with serious injuries tonight.

Pedestrian, 86, in hospital with serious injuries

The pedestrian, who police now say is an 86-year-old man, is in hospital after suffering serious injuries.

The force originally said the victim was aged in his 70s.

In a new appeal, a force spokesperson said: “We are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage, following a serious collision on Manchester Road, Oldham at 12.36pm today (Wednesday 21 August 2024).

“It was reported that a truck has collided with a pedestrian. The pedestrian, an 86-year-old man, has been taken to hospital where he remains with serious injuries.”

Road remains closed

Officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit are at the scene.

Collision investigation work is taking place with the road still cordoned off.

Investigations ongoing at the scene

Investigations remain ongoing at the scene of the collision this evening.

Police attended to reports of a pedestrian being struck by a heavy goods vehicle.

A man, aged in his 70s, was rushed to hospital from the scene.

“I heard screeching… then the police arrived”

A witness who lives nearby said she heard a loud ‘screeching’ sound moments before the pedestrian was hit this afternoon.

A man, in his 70s, was rushed to hospital after the HGV ploughed into him on Manchester Road.

“I was in the kitchen at around 12:30pm making lunch and the window was open. I heard screeching and what sounded like a big vehicle breaking hard.

“I looked out of the window and saw a HGV with an open back full of beams.

“The air ambulance flew over our home into the park around 1pm. I am praying the man recovers and I didn’t realise someone got run over until hours later.”

Area being cordoned off

Manchester Road has now been taped off amid investigations into the earlier crash.

Police remain at the scene and are expected to for some time this evening.

We understand the victim, a man in his 70s, has been rushed to Salford Royal Hospital.

Traffic ‘horrendous’ with main routes ‘gridlocked’

A witness at the scene said traffic in the area is ‘horrendous’ as police continue to respond to the serious collision earlier today.

They said: “Routes through Chadderton are gridlocked. Traffic is horrendous. It’s the main route in and out of Oldham.”

The northbound side of Manchester Road remains blocked by police this afternoon.

Air ambulance landed at nearby park

The air ambulance that was called out to the scene landed on nearby Werneth Park.

A witness who lives close to the scene said the helicopter landed shortly before 1pm.

Police issue statement on horror collision and appeal for witnesses

Greater Manchester Police have now issued a full statement on the incident this afternoon.

An investigation into the collision has been launched and the force are appealing for witnesses.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police has said: “At around 12.35pm today (Wednesday 21 August 2024), we were called to reports of a collision between a Heavy Goods Vehicle and a pedestrian on Manchester Road, Oldham.

“The pedestrian, a man in his 70s, has been taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries. No arrests have been made and the driver of the HGV remained at the scene and is assisting officers with their enquiries.

“Investigations are ongoing.

Man in his 70s hit by HGV

Police have now confirmed a man in his 70s has been hit by the HGV this afternoon.

Emergency services were first called at around 12.35pm.

His condition and the nature of his injuries have not been confirmed but he has been taken to hospital for treatment.
