After a three-vehicle collision on the M5 continues to cause delays this afternoon, police have released an update. When all three lanes of traffic on the M5 northbound at J19 for Portishead were stopped after the collision, just after 4 p.m., the event was first reported.

It has since been confirmed by Avon and Somerset Police that there were no reported injuries in the collision. According to National Highways South-West, all lanes but one had reopened by 5:30 p.m. However, four miles of traffic lingered, resulting in delays of up to forty-five minutes. Traffic was backed up nearly all the way back to J20 for Clevedon.

Additionally, as of 6:45 p.m., one lane was still blocked because traffic cops were still present to supervise the recovery of vehicles.

A statement from Avon and Somerset Police, issued at 5.40pm on Sunday, said: “We were called at 3.54pm to reports of a three-vehicle collision on the northbound carriageway of the M5 between junctions 19 (Portishead) and 18 ( Avonmouth ).

“Officers attended and remain at the scene. One lane is closed and no injuries have been reported.”

The latest statement from Inrix at 6.35pm said: “One lane closed and queueing traffic due to recovery work and multi-vehicle accident on M5 Northbound at J19 A369 Martcombe Road (Portishead).

“Congestion to after Clapton-in-Gordano.”
