LIVE: A1(M) flooding closure to impact rush hour traffic as motorists adivsed to plan journey

Teesside has been hit with heavy rain on Wednesday morning, with a warning in place for the rest of the day

Teessiders have woken up to very wet Wednesday morning.

Heavy rain started overnight and is forecast to continue throughout the day. The Met Office has also issed a yellow weather warning for persistent heavy rain until 3.00pm on Wednesday, October 9.

The warning covers areas including Middlesbrough, Stockton, Redcar and Cleveland, Hartlepool and Darlington. The Met Office advises people to give themselves the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary.

A1(M) flooding closure to impact rush hour traffic

The A1(M) remains closed, and police have said that it is likely to impact rush hour traffic. An update from Durham Constabulary says:

The road closures in place across the county are likely to have an impact on rush hour traffic. It is advisable to start planning your journey home.

The A1(M) between J59 (Newton Aycliffe) and J60 (Sedgefield) at Darlington and the A68 at Burtree Gate remain closed due to flooding. We are continuing to support our partners at the Highways Agency and County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service while they work to clear these routes.

No timescale has been set for the reopening opening of these routes as an assessment of the carriageway will be required by the Highways Agency once it has been cleared of water.

Traffic normal on A19

Following the earlier severe delays, traffic on the A19 has now returned to normal.

Latest situation on A1(M) closure

Latest full details on A1(M) closure:

A1(M) in both directions closed, long delays due to flooding from J60 A689 (Bradbury) to J59 A167 (Aycliffe). Congestion to J61 (Bowburn) for southbound and J58 (Burtree) for northbound traffic. It’s also very slow through the roadworks at Rushyford Roundabout. Contractors are on scene working towards clearing the water.

Ongoing since around 07:00am. Diversion – For northbound via the A167 through Newton Aycliffe then on to the A689, rejoin at J60 (Bradbury). For southbound via the A689 then on to the A167, rejoin at J59 (Aycliffe).

Hour-by-hour forecast

People in the region awoke to heavy downpours and it’s not set to break off for the next few hours at least. The band of heavy rain is expected to move slowly south during the day with up to 40mm predicted in some areas, particularly on the coast.

The rain will be joined by strong winds and could cause some disruption to travelling Teessiders while also potentially affecting infrastructure, according to the national weather service. Here’s a quick hour-by-hour forecast of Wednesday’s weather.

A19 delays easing

With rish hour over, delays are easing on the A19.

Flood Alert at Middlesbrough Becks (Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland)

River levels on Middlesbrough Becks are high due to last night’s persistent and heavy rainfall, and levels are expected to continue rising this morning 09/10/2024.

Flooding along riverside footpaths and low lying land and roads is possible. We are closely monitoring the situation.

Take care and avoid walking, cycling or driving through flood water.

Traffic delays reported on Teesside

These are the current delays reported on Teesside:

  • One lane closed and heavy traffic due to accident on A174 Westbound at A172 Stokesley Road.
  • Slow traffic on A172 Dixons Bank Northbound from A1043 (Poole Roundabout) to A174 Parkway. Travel time is ten minutes.
  • Queueing traffic on A19 coming from Wolviston Southbound before A1046 Haverton Hill Road (Portrack Interchange). Travel time is 20 minutes.
  • Slow traffic on A19 Tees Flyover Northbound before A1046 Haverton Hill Road (Portrack Interchange). Travel time is five minutes.
  • Slow traffic on A67 High Street in Yarm around Sainsburys. Travel time is ten minutes.
  • Slow traffic on A177 Durham Road around A1027 Bishopton Avenue. Travel time is five minutes.

 

Weather warning

Good morning everyone. It’s a miserable start to the day on Teesside with heavy rain set in for most of the day.

Traffic on Teesside seems to coping okay at the moment though there are more severe delays across the rest of the North-east.

The weather warning for heavy rain is in place until 3.00pm and covers the whole of our region.

The Met Office states:

A band of persistent, heavy rain will move slowly south and may lead to some disruption to transport and infrastructure. A band of heavy rain will move slowly south through Wednesday, before clearing during the afternoon. A further 20-30mm of rain is likely, with a few places perhaps seeing 40mm or more, leading to some travel disruption.
