Grimsby Town’s free agent player left and set to join rival team
Otis Khan is expected to sign for Oldham Athletic after leaving Grimsby Town, according to a report from The Oldham Times.
Following the expiration of his contract at the end of the previous season, Grimsby Town decided to part ways with the winger. Since late June, he has been accessible and has been considering his next course of action.
Khan, 28, became a member of the Mariners in 2022 and played in 52 games across all competitions, contributing six goals. In the previous January transfer window, he went on loan to Hartlepool United, but he only made one appearance for the Pools before returning to Blundell Park.
According to The Oldham Times’ most recent update on his status, he will be permanently joining Oldham Athletic, where he will work under former Tranmere Rovers manager Micky Mellon. He has recently been put on trial by the National League team, and he has performed well enough to get a contract.
New move for departed Grimsby Town man
Khan was signed by Grimsby Town a few years ago after they were promoted back to the Football League.
The Mariners brought him in to give their offensive unit additional depth and competition.
The Manchester-born player was popular in his debut season but got little action in the previous one, which is why Hartlepool United called on him to leave on a temporary basis.
This summer, Khan wasn’t the only player to leave Grimsby Town. Harvey Tomlinson, Edwin Essel, Jamie Bramwell, Aaron Braithwaite, Niall Maher, Anthony Glennon, Abo Eisa, Arthur Gnahoua, Gavan Holohan, and Danny Amos were also released.
When he was a young player in 2012, he moved from Manchester United to Sheffield United.
In order to gain experience, the South Yorkshire team leased the Pakistani international to Buxton, Matlock Town, and Barrow after he appeared twice for the Blades’ first squad.
Afterwards, Khan had stints at Walsall, Yeovil Town, Newport County, Barnsley, Tranmere Rovers, and Leyton Orient.
What next for ex-Grimsby Town man?
Given his recent travels, he need to make an effort to establish a permanent home at Oldham Athletic.
Khan will be moving closer to his hometown of Ashton-under-Lyne, which is advantageous for him as he grew up not too far from Oldham.
Mellon will be hopeful that the Latics can climb out of the fifth division this year.
