BOSTON CELTIC
Former Celtics shooter leaves NBA for Olympiacos.
After a decade in the NBA, Evan Fournier is taking his skills overseas. The French sharpshooter entered the NBA as a first-round pick of the Denver Nuggets in the 2012 draft. He played seven of his twelve seasons in the NBA with the Orlando Magic.
The Boston Celtics acquired Fourner at the 2021 trade deadline, after he helped them to straight first-round playoff berths. In 16 regular season games with his new squad, including ten starts, he averaged 13 points, 3.3 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 1.3 steals. He also made 46.3 percent of the 5.9 three-pointers he attempted.
The Celtics were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Brooklyn Nets, spearheaded by Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and James Harden. That summer, Fournier signed with the New York Knicks. In the “Big Apple,” he used the disappointment of not receiving a new contract with Boston as motivation to become a Celtics killer in the 2021-22 season. In three games versus them that season, Fournier averaged 35 points while shooting 55.4 percent from the field and 54.1 percent from outside the arc.
After starting last year with the Knicks but only participating in three games, he was included in a transaction prior to the trade deadline that sent Bojan Bogdanovic and Alec Burks to the Knicks and Fournier to the Detroit Pistons. In 29 games, he averaged 7.2 points per contest. He then helped France win the gold medal game against Team USA, averaging over 10 points per game for the host nation at the Paris Olympics this summer.
Fournier has signed a two-year contract with EuroLeague club Olympiacos worth more than $4 million, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic. While the 31-year-old wing may return to the NBA in the future, this decision positions him to complete his playing career overseas.
