Leeds United reclaimed their position in the automatic promotion spots after securing a 2-0 victory against local rivals Sheffield Wednesday. Patrick Bamford netted a goal just before halftime, followed by Willy Gnonto adding a second after the break, extending Leeds’ unbeaten league streak in 2024 to 12 matches.

Under the guidance of Daniel Farke, Leeds now trail Championship leaders Leicester by two points, having overtaken Ipswich. Their promotion contenders, including Southampton, are scheduled to play on Saturday.

Despite having won five of their last six league matches, Sheffield Wednesday missed an opportunity to escape the relegation zone for the first time since August. Their four-game winning streak came to an end with this defeat.

According to Leeds manager Daniel Farke, his team deserved “a massive three points.”

It was a well-earned victory, the German stated. From my perspective, the performance was quite composed and well-grounded.

“Clearly, you could sense that Sheffield was on a positive streak, playing confidently in front of their enthusiastic home crowd.

“However, our strategy was to wear down our opponents, dampen their enthusiasm, and nullify their aggression. I’m extremely proud of my players tonight. Securing these three points was crucial for us.”

Owls manager Danny Rohl expressed pride in his team’s performance but received a booking in the second half for protesting against a foul.

He mentioned that emotions ran high due to the extended injury time played by referee Sam Allison at the end of the first half.

“This was a crucial moment. Initially, the referee indicated four minutes of added time, but then it extended beyond that – and everyone can ponder whether this was a decisive factor.

“I’m genuinely disappointed about this incident. We were hoping to enter halftime with a scoreline of nil-nil. I won’t dwell too much on certain decisions.”
