Born-again Ross Barkley brings hope back to Luton

Barkley’s recent performances have sparked discussions among some about a potential return to the England national team, nearly five years since his last appearance for the Three Lions. Former England midfielder Jermaine Jenas advocated for Barkley’s inclusion last month, while former Chelsea teammate Cesc Fabregas praised his current form, stating that “he’s playing at a fantastic level.”

Regarding the speculation, Barkley stated, “Why not? I feel like I’ve significantly improved as a player compared to my younger years. While it’s something I consider, I’m aware of the fierce competition for places in the England squad.”

He continued, expressing confidence in his abilities: “I believe in myself. I think I can contribute positively to the squad. The deeper midfield role suits me perfectly now. I have a better grasp of the game, enabling me to take calculated risks, create chances, and demonstrate improved defensive discipline.”

Ross Barkley, a midfielder for Luton Town, claims to have gone “back in time” this season after finding his best form again with the Premier League’s newcomers.

Barkley, aged 30, made an unexpected move to newly promoted Luton last summer after a brief stint in France.

His transfer to Kenilworth Road has resulted in him playing the most league minutes in a season in seven years, sparking discussions about a potential return to the England national team.

“I feel like I’m in a positive place once again,” Barkley expressed to BBC Sport.

“I can solely focus on playing matches, enjoying training sessions, and helping my team achieve the best possible results without any other distractions.”

Having joined his childhood club Everton at the age of 11, Barkley made his debut for the club in 2011 at the age of 18, drawing natural comparisons to Wayne Rooney.

Roberto Martinez, Barkley’s manager at Goodison Park from 2013 to 2016, described the midfielder as “destined to play football,” and Barkley represented England in all three matches at the 2014 World Cup.
