Following a man’s death in “a busy pub in the city centre,” a murder inquiry has been opened.

Reports of an attack at Chichester’s West Street’s The Dolphin and Anchor bar prompted police to respond.

Following head injuries, a 57-year-old South Yorkshire man was declared dead at the scene.

Specialized officers have been notified and will provide support to his next of kin.

Two men have been arrested and remain in police custody.

A 30-year-old man from Birmingham has been arrested on suspicion of murder and a 42-year-old man from County Durham was arrested on suspicion of affray.

A third man suspected of affray has been identified but remains outstanding, and efforts to locate him are ongoing.

Police have taped off a section of West Street and Chapel Street near the department store, House of Fraser and near Chichester Cathedral.

Blue tents have been put in place, as forensics teams investigate in the cordoned off area.

Det Ch Insp Suzanne Joseph, of the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team, said: “This incident led to the tragic death of a 57-year-old man, and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.
