Birmingham City target move that Steven Gerrard had attempted to fulfill

Birmingham City are ready to sign a second Rangers player this summer transfer season, with sources in Scotland saying that winger Scott Wright will join the Blues before Friday night’s deadline.

Wright, 27, was born and raised in Aberdeen, progressing through the Dons youth before breaking into the Pittodrie first squad, where he made 80 appearances. He then moved to Rangers in 2020, where he played under Steven Gerrard and won the SPL title, Scottish Cup, Scottish League Cup, and placed second in the Europa League.

Indeed, it was rumored that Gerrard, who is now the manager of Saudi Pro League Al-Ettifaq, considered rejoining with Wright, who has been a regular in the Gers side for three seasons, last summer, but the move never happened.

During his tenure at Ibrox, Gerrard admired Wright’s ability and performances. On the first day of the 2021-22 season, when Rangers defeated Livingston 3-0 and Wright scored as a replacement, Gerrard stated, “Scott might have started today. I think his preseason efforts have been terrific.

We’re working on him a lot in the final third in trying to get numbers into his game. I thought he came on today and he was a right bright spark. Full of energy, he sees a pass, he’s always looking forward and looking to penetrate. He’s quick and he got his rewards from another strong performance.”

Wright now appears likely to bolster Chris Davies’ options in the wide areas at St Andrew’s, and while Ben Davies has joined Blues from Rangers on a season-long loan, Wright is expected to sign on a permanent basis. He will provide further competition for Ayumu Yokoyama, Keshi Anderson, Emil Hansson, and Koji Miyoshi, with Siriki Dembele on his way out and George Hall not likely to be in Davies’ immediate plans.

According to Sky Sports, Wright has traveled to the Second City to perform a physical before the Friday night deadline. Wright made 120 appearances for the Glasgow club, scoring 12 goals.
